49 (English): Studio Series presents DiablaDivina

"Would you still love me if I had a really dark thing inside of me?"

 

Welcome to the Studio Series: experiments in audio storytelling from some of the most exciting theatre artists from our TransAmerican community in Canada. First you’ll hear a work in process, then a short talk by the artist on their creative process. 

 

DiablaDivina is about a young girl (Niña) and her tumultuous relationship with the Virgin Mary (Maria). Maria guides Niña through her memories to shed light on Niña's shame filled past. Niña learns that there is more to Maria than the woman who lives in the painting in her bedroom.

J & A Collective is founded by multidisciplinary artists Jeysa Caridad and Adriana Moraes-Mendoza. They create and share original, culturally inspired stories engaged by female narratives. As a collective, they were residents of Factory Theatre’s Foundry where they completed the first draft of their co-written play, DiablaDivina. This piece continued on to Assembly Theatre’s 150 Workshop series, excerpted and showcased in Aluna’s 2019 Caminos festival, and is now being adapted into an audio experience with Aluna Theatre. The Collective is currently in Paprika Festival’s Producer unit working on their latest project, Not Your Mija - a film inspired by the experiences of three very different Latinx women. In between writing scripts, co-directing, and co-producing, the two release monthly collaborative series of visual artistry and poetry which can be found on their social media page, @j.a_collective.

En este episodio podrás escuchar un trabajo en proceso, seguido por una breve charla de las artistas sobre su proceso creativo. 

 

DiablaDivina es una pieza teatral sobre una niña (Niña) y su tumultuosa relación con la Virgen María (María). María guía a Niña a través de sus recuerdos para darle luz al pasado de Niña que está lleno de vergüenza. Niña descubre que María es más que la mujer que vive en el cuadro de su cuarto.

J & A Collective está fundado por las artistas multidisciplinares Jeysa Caridad y Adriana Moraes-Mendoza. Este colectivo crea y comparte historias originales, culturalmente inspiradas involucrando la narrativa femenina. Como colectivo, han tenido residencias en el programa “Foundry” de Factory Theatre, donde completaron el primer borrador de su obra coescrita, DiablaDivina. Esta pieza continuó con la serie de 150 talleres de Assembly Theatre, una parte de este guión fue presentado en el festival de Aluna Teatro Caminos 2019, y actualmente esta obra ha sido adaptada a una experiencia de audio con Aluna Teatro. El Colectivo se encuentra actualmente en la unidad de Productores del Festival Paprika donde se encuentran trabajando en su último proyecto, Not Your Mija, una película inspirada en las experiencias de tres mujeres Latinx muy diferentes. Entre escribir guiones, codirigir y la coproducción, Jeysa y Adriana han lanzando una series mensual colaborativa de arte visual y poesía que pueden encontrar en su página de redes sociales, @ j.a_collective.
