78 (English): Merendiando with Claren Grosz

I think I feel a responsibility to complicate the conversation and again bring ... what’s actually happening on the ground. You know, if you don’t work in the oil and gas industry it’s easy to look at it and be like ‘yeah… what are we doing over there, that’s terrible, we should stop that.’ But if you are someone who is working in it, it’s not that simple. We’re not gonna get anywhere if those two components of the world aren’t talking to each other.                  - Claren Grosz

In this episode, we chat with Claren Grosz. She is a queer Toronto based theatre and visual artist. Her theatre practice focuses on physical, visually compelling work and holistic, non-hierarchical theatre making processes. Also, she is the artistic director of Pencil Kit Productions. Claren is the creator and performer of “I Love The Smell of Gasoline”, opening  at 2022 RUTAS Festival.

In “I Love The Smell of Gasoline”, Claren attempts to reconcile her Alberta oil-industry roots with the current environmental emergency. The project was born of a frustration with divisive Canadian politics, rampant hypocrisy, and a lack of team spirit when facing impending doom. It unpacks some of the forces that drive global warming and Western alienation in a personal account of what it is to live in a modern, capitalist environment, be a self-serving organism, and also care about the earth and fellow creature kind. 

Our co-host for this episode is Theresa Cutknife, a Nehiyaw and Puerto Rican actor, writer, curator, storyteller, and emerging producer from Maskwacîs, Alberta, located on Treaty 6 Territory, who is a member of the Samson Cree Nation.

Creo que siento la responsabilidad de complicar la conversación y decir algo así... como... Esto es lo que realmente está sucediendo. Sabes, si no trabajas en la industria del petróleo y el gas, es fácil mirarlo y decir  'sí, eso es... qué estamos pasando allí, eso es terrible, deberíamos detener eso', pero si eres alguien que está trabajando en esa industria, no es tan simple. No vamos a llegar a ningún lugar si esos dos componentes del mundo no se hablan entre sí.     - Claren Grosz

En este episodio, platicamos con Claren Grosz. Ella es una artista visual y de teatro queer basada en Toronto. Su práctica teatral se centra en un trabajo físico, visualmente cautivador y en los procesos de creación teatral holísticos y no jerárquicos. Además, Claren es la directora artística de Pencil Kit Productions.  Es creadora e intérprete de “I love the smell of Gasoline”, que será parte del Festival RUTAS 2022.

Claren intenta reconciliar sus raíces con la industria petrolera en Alberta con la actual crisis ambiental. Este proyecto nació de una frustración con la política divisiva de Canadá, la rampante hipocresía, y la falta de un espíritu de trabajo en equipo para enfrentarnos a un final inminente. Nos muestra algunas de las fuerzas que nos están llevando al calentamiento ambiental y la alienación del Oeste en Canadá en un relato personal de lo que es vivir en un mundo moderno, capitalista, ser un organismo interesado y al mismo tiempo cuidar del planeta y de sus otras criaturas que lo habitan.

Nuestra coanfitrióna de este episodio es Theresa Cutknife, ella es Nehiyaw y Puertorriqueña. Theresa es una actriz, escritora, curadora, narradora y productora emergente de Maskwacîs, Alberta, ubicado en el Territorio del Tratado 6 y es miembro de la Nación Samson Cree,
