This week is all about reflecting, and checking in with the community. Camila and Monica discuss how a year of physical distancing has impacted their art practice, and we hear from extra special guests Yolanda Bonnell, Rhoma Spencer, Sofia Fly, and the Party People Collective, Elizabeth Staples and Jordan Campbell.
How have you adapted your craft to this new context? Did you venture into digital or different live performance, or keep to yourself? What do you wish you knew 12 months ago? We dive into all these questions and more.

Yolanda Bonnell (She/They) is a Queer 2 Spirit Anishinaabe-Ojibwe & South Asian Dora nominated multidisciplinary performer, writer and facilitator. Check out their instagram.
Rhoma Spencer, Actor, Play-creator, Director and Comedian, is a veteran theatre practitioner practicing in Toronto since 2001. Check out her instagram.
The Party People Collective is Jord Camp and Elizabeth Staples. Jord Camp is a genderfluid, genderqueer club kid alternative drag performer in Toronto. “The Party People Collective” es Jord Camp y Elizabeth Staples. Jord Camp Es un artista de género fluido, género queer, club kid, performer de drag alternativo en Toronto. This week we’re interviewing Umang Antariksh Sagar and Kumari Giles, host/creator and producer host of Possibilities Podcast!
Possibilities Podcast engages in deep dive conversations with queer and trans, Black, Indigenous, people of colour artists and possibility makers. They seek to be a portal for inspiration and insight, and invite listeners to generate their own infinite possibilities.
Umang Antariksh Sagar, the creator and host, and Kumari Giles, the show’s producer are also multidisciplinary artists - Umang is a filmmaker, writer, visual artist, and Kumari is a dancer, curator, aerialist, and community cook.
In this interview we talked about their podcast meetcute story, how their definition of a ‘possibility’ guides their work, and their insights on what makes a strong collective movement.

"Life is way too short to be learning everything by yourself" - Ghenoa Gela
Our guest this week is Ghenoa Gela, a strong Torres Strait Islander woman from Rockhampton, Central Queensland! She's a Sydney-based independent performing artist working across dance, circus, television and stage. Ghenoa is a recipient of the Keir Choreographic Award and winner of the Deadly Funny Melbourne International Comedy Festival Award 2017. Follow her on Instagram and Facebook!
In this interview we talk about traditional dance as an artform and a lifestyle, what makes Ghenoa laugh, the connection between performer and spectator, and “leveling up”.

Welcome to the Studio Series: experiments in audio storytelling from some of the most exciting theatre artists from our TransAmerican community in Canada. First you’ll hear a work in process, then a short talk by the artist on their creative process. This presentation is also available in Spanish.
A journey from one home to another. The Cunning Linguist tells the story of Monica, a young Mexican girl that realizes that God made her queer. What Monica sees as an honour, people close to her see as wrong. Thanks to a TV show Monica decides to move to Toronto, with God (Diosito) as her unlikely sidekick, where she begins to learn more about herself, freedom and sex.
Monica Garrido is a Toronto based Mexican Artist, Filmmaker, Writer, Producer, Comedian, Performer and Storyteller that uses comedy as a tool and a shield to express herself. Her short films "Diferente" and the horror-comedy "Love You to Death" have been part of the Inside Out LGBT Film Festival. She’s part of the ensemble of the Canadian Comedy Award winner show Sketch Comedy Extravaganza Eleganza. Monica is the 2018 recipient of the Queer Emerging Artist Award at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. She is one third of a Latinx Drag King Boyband and currently Co-host and Co- Produces “Merendiando” part of Radio Aluna Theatre. She is also a Taurus and wishes you the best.
Beatriz Pizano (Director) is an accomplished director and playwright. She is also an actor with more than twenty years of experience on stage, film and television. She is the 2009 winner of the prestigious John Hirsch Prize for Direction from the Canada Council for the Arts and the recipient of numerous awards and internships including The Ken McDougall Award for Direction, The Chalmers Fellowship, The Urjo Kareda Award (Tarragon Theatre), and The Metcalf Performing Arts Internship. She has been an Associate Artistic Director for Theatre Revolve and Nightwood Theatre.
As a writer/director Beatriz has been nominated three times for Best New Play for her multi-award winning trilogy about women and war comprised of For Sale, Madre, and La Comunión. She has also created and led a number of youth programs both in Canada and Colombia. Most recently, she facilitated a theatre/photography workshop with ex-combatant children and youth victims from the armed conflict in her native Colombia.
The Cunning Linguist was Created with support from the Emerging Creators Unit at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, and winner of the 2016 Queer Acts Audience Award. This piece development has been supported by The Ontario Arts Council and Aluna Theatre.

Bienvenidos al Studio Serie: experimentaciones de narrativas de audio creadas por algunos de los artistas de teatro más interesantes de nuestra comunidad TransAmericana en Canadá. En este episodio podrás escuchar un trabajo en proceso, seguido por una breve charla del artista sobre su proceso creativo. Esta presentación también está disponible en Inglés.
Un viaje de un hogar a otro. The Cunning Linguist cuenta la historia de Mónica, una joven mexicana que a los 12 años se da cuenta que Dios la hizo “queer”. Lo que Monica ve como un honor, las personas cercanas a ella lo ven como algo incorrecto. Gracias a un programa de televisión, Mónica decide mudarse a Toronto con Diosito a su lado, donde comienza a aprender más sobre sí misma, sobre la libertad y el sexo.
Mónica Garrido es una artista, cineasta, escritora, productora, directora, comediante y performer mexicana basada en Toronto, que usa la comedia como una herramienta y un escudo para expresarse. Sus cortometrajes "Diferente" y la comedia de terror "Love You to Death" han sido parte del LGBT Festival Inside Out. Mónica forma parte del elenco de “Sketch Comedy Extravaganza Eleganza” , show ganador de un Canadian Comedy Award. En el 2018 Mónica recibió el “Queer Emerging Artist Award” de Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. Ella es un tercio del grupo Latinx Drag King Boyband y actualmente es copresentadora y coproductora de “Merendiando, parte de Radio Aluna Theatre. Mónica es Tauro y te desea lo mejor.
Beatriz Pizano (Directora) es una destacada directora y escritora teatral, con más de veinte años de experiencia trabajando como actriz en teatro, cine y televisión. En el 2009 el Consejo para las Artes de Canadá otorgó a Beatriz el prestigioso premio John Hirsch en Dirección Teatral. Beatriz ha sido galardonada con varias becas y premios, entre ellos: el premio de dirección Ken McDougall, la beca Chalmers, el premio Urjo Kareda (en Tarragon Theatre) y la beca para las artes escénicas de la Fundación Metcalf. Ha sido Directora Artística Asociada en Theatre Revolve y Nightwood Theatre. Su trilogía de obras sobre la mujer y la guerra: For Sale, Madre, y La Comunión, recibió tres nominaciones para el premio Dora Mavor Moore a la Mejor Obra Original. Beatriz también ha creado y dirigido múltiples programas para jóvenes en Colombia y Canadá. El más reciente de estos proyectos fue un taller de fotografía y teatro que facilitó en Medellín, Colombia, con jóvenes excombatientes y víctimas del conflicto armado.
The Cunning Linguist fue creado con el apoyo de la Unidad de Creadores Emergentes de Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, y ganó el Premio del Público “Queer Acts 2016”. El desarrollo de esta pieza ha sido apoyado por el Ontario Arts Council y Aluna Theatre.

“I’m an ancient recipe that has lost its origin.”
Welcome to the Studio Series: experiments in audio storytelling from some of the most exciting theatre artists from our TransAmerican community in Canada. First you’ll hear a work in process, then a short talk by the artist on their creative process. This presentation is also available in Spanish.
Sharing a meal is an intimate and immediate gesture of love. Reina is a performance ritual that strives to create this same atmosphere. It invokes and celebrates personal femininity and Indigeneity through a collection of memories, stories, recipes, and physical scores in conversation with live afro-venezuelan percussion and vocals by musician Y Josephine. And arepas.
Augusto Bitter is a Dora Award-winning performer, writer, facilitator, and artistic producer based in Toronto. He is a Resident Artist at Aluna Theatre and has been in-residence at Canadian Stage, Theatre Passe Muraille, and hub14. He has trained with Teatro delle Radici (Switzerland), Manifesto Poetico (Paris), Canada's National Voice Intensive, Aluna Theatre's Interpretation Lab, and the University of Toronto. Augusto is also a youth educator with Soulpepper and Story Planet. He is developing a new piece—Reina—with musician Y Josephine, and his short film cannibal will be a part of Toronto Queer Film Festival 2021. www.augustobitter.com
Y Josephine is a Venezuelan-Canadian, and a citizen of the world, whose contagious passion for percussion has propelled her to travel far and wide sharing her epic fusion sounds of the South. Driven by the potent, soothing, and vibrant music she’s helped to create, she is one of the founders of Baobá, a trio formed by Toronto’s top female percussionists taking traditional beats to the next level. Empowered by the natural musicality that flows from South American bodies, that trio-and-sometimes-quartet, featuring fellow Jamphitheatre-er Anita Graciano alongside Mari Palhares and Carla Dias, represents an ideal balance of voice, melody, and instrumentation bringing new life to, and transcending, Venezuelan, Colombian, and Brazilian traditions. She also is part of the Amao Kuda Et les Bois crue, described by Now Magazine as a "tantalizing afro soul combo of folk, roots, desert blues and African continental music". Y is working with Victoria Mata on Cacao: A Venezuelan Lament and with Augusto Bitter on Reina (both dance-theatre hybrids).
Reina’s development has been supported by Cristina Castrillo and Bruna Gusberti at Teatro delle Radici, Claren Grosz, b current performing arts, Canadian Stage, and Aluna Theatre.

Compartir una comida es un gesto de amor íntimo e inmediato. Reina es un ritual de actuación que se esfuerza por crear esta misma atmósfera. Invoca y celebra la feminidad personal y la indigeneidad a través de una colección de recuerdos, historias, recetas y partituras físicas en conversación con percusión afro-venezolana en vivo y en voz de la artista musical Y Josephine. Augusto Bitter es un intérprete, escritor, facilitador y productor artístico ganador del premio Dora basado en Toronto. Actualmente es artista residente en Aluna Theatre y ha tenido residencias artísticas en Canadian Stage, Theatre Passe Muraille y hub14. Augusto ha entrenado en el Teatro delle Radici (Suiza), Manifesto Poetico (París), el National Voice Intensive de Canadá, el Laboratorio de Interpretación de Aluna Theatre y la Universidad de Toronto. Augusto trabaja con jóvenes en programas de educación de Soulpepper y Story Planet. Y Josephine es una venezolana-canadiense, ciudadana del mundo, cuya contagiosa pasión por la percusión la ha impulsado a viajar por todas partes compartiendo sus épicos sonidos de fusión del Sur. Impulsada por la música potente, relajante y vibrante que ayudó a crear, es una de las fundadoras de Baobá, un trío formado por las mejores percusionistas de Toronto que llevan los ritmos tradicionales al siguiente nivel. Fortalecida por la musicalidad natural que fluye de los cuerpos sudamericanos, ese trío y, a veces, cuarteto, con la compañera de Jamphitheatre-er Anita Graciano junto a Mari Palhares y Carla Dias, representan un equilibrio ideal de voz, melodía e instrumentación que le da nueva vida a y trascienden las tradiciones venezolanas, colombianas y brasileñas. También es parte de Amao Kuda Et les Bois crue, descrita por Now Magazine como una "tentadora combinación de afro soul de folk, roots, desert blues y música continental africana". Y actualmente está trabajando con Victoria Mata en Cacao: A Venezuelan Lament y con Augusto Bitter en Reina (ambos híbridos de danza y teatro).
