ENG: Welcome to first LIVE episode of Merendiando! This year we had the opportunity to be part of the CAMINOS Festival - every night before the evening’s shows, we hosted an interview in front of a live audience.
In this live episode, Monica and Camila shared a merienda with some of the members of Grupo Teatro Libre. Founded in 2008, Grupo Teatro Libre creates collective community theatre in Spanish, representing original creations and Latin American playwrights in their original language, while always promoting solidarity and respect for human rights. We talked about how the group started and how has being part of it has shaped their lives as well of where do they see it going in the next 10 years. Grab a snack and let’s get started!

EN: Monica and Camila had the pleasure to talk to Liliana Suarez Henao. Liliana gave voice to Julia, one of the title characters in our Spanish presentation of MADRE by Beatriz Pizano. In this final episode of our first season, we discuss Liliana’s experiences making theatre in Medellin, developing Spanish language theatre in Canada, and negotiating the roles of actor, audience, mother, and daughter, among many others.

It's the Year of Disasters.
Madre is a theatrical memoir that follows Julia de Maria Auxiliadora, an aging woman in Colombia who is fighting to maintain a sense of self as she succumbs to Alzheimer’s. As Julia’s lifetime of memories unravels, her adopted daughter Angela returns from Toronto to care for her, and to make one last desperate attempt to resolve their conflicted relationship while Julia still recognizes her.

It's "the year of disasters", according to Julia. She is still denying her Alzheimer’s, despite being diagnosed by 2 different doctors. Angela is left alone to figure out the reality of the situation.

Es el Año de los Desastres.
Madre es una memoria teatral que sigue la vida de Julia de María Auxiliadora, una mujer en Colombia que lucha por mantener su sentido de sí misma cuando sucumbe ante el Alzheimer. Mientras los recuerdos de la vida de Julia se desenredan frente a ella, su hija adoptada, Angela, regresa de Toronto para cuidarla y hacer un último y desesperado intento de resolver su relación conflictiva, antes de que Julia la olvide.

Guilt. Memory. A mother and daughter battle against Alzheimers in a country at war.
Madre is a theatrical memoir that follows Julia de Maria Auxiliadora, an aging woman in Colombia who is fighting to maintain a sense of self as she succumbs to Alzheimer’s. As Julia’s lifetime of memories unravels, her adopted daughter Angela returns from Toronto to care for her, and to make one last desperate attempt to resolve their conflicted relationship while Julia still recognizes her.

The story so far:
Julia is deteriorating rapidly, and she can't distinguish between dreams, reality, and the memory land. When her daughter Angela finally arrives to Medellín, she finds Julia's apartment in a terrible state and realizes that something is terribly wrong.
